I found this scene just off to the side of a trail in Acadia National Park in Maine in the fall of 2018. I had been searching all afternoon for a scene such as this, as the birch forest I was in had quite a bit of fallen trees. Intermixed with the birch were hardwoods such as oak and maple trees as well, providing a brilliant mix of color. I quickly set up my 8x10 camera and exposed a couple sheets of film before the sun came back out behind the clouds. This scene was just too perfect not to photograph, and has quickly become one of my favorite photographs I’ve made.
