Twilight at White Sands National Monument in south central New Mexico is a bizarre visual phenomenon. Because the sand is such a bright white, the slightest amount of light and color is reflected from its surface, so while it may appear dark, it tricks your eyes and completely throws off your perception of death. But because it is such bright white sand, the colors that appear during sunrise and sunset are outstanding, as seen in this long exposure on 4x5 film.
