Flames on the Prairie
Flames on the Prairie
Annually, ranchers in the Flint Hills set fire to their great expanses of grassland to mimic the prehistoric spring burns, and bring new life to the landscape. It’s quite a marvel to see thousands of acres ablaze in a controlled burn, and since they are “back burns,” they are burning into the wind, which makes them relatively easy to photograph. This image was photographed as the fire slowly crept towards my tripod. I was really drawn to the juxtaposition of the winter prairie and the burned prairie, with a streak of flames across the center. It’s almost a metaphor for spring itself.
