The playa of Death Valley is ever moving, reshaping, and sinking and changing. It is one of the driest places on earth, and its very evident by its environment. These mud cracks were formed at the base of the playa before a large dune field formed on top of it. Now, as the dune field moves, it reveals its mud cracks from beneath.
